Helene Goldnadel on The Importance of Art in a Child's Life

Children love to experiment with whatever media is available to them. Art, being a natural expression, gives children an easy and smooth outlet for them to express their emotions, ideas and thoughts. Often, as a parent, you might be surprised to see what your children have drawn at school or at home when you weren’t around. They reflect a variety of feelings and ideas which are hidden within your child. It is essential to provide plenty of encouragement to children to draw, paint, color, or even sculpt, in whatever form they are interested in.

Plenty of therapists recommend art as a form of therapy to help children open up and to build self-confidence. This applies especially in the case of children who have undergone abuse. They tend to produce the most talented artwork.

Art provides children with many opportunities to express them. It helps them to use it as a language especially when words are not enough or when it is too complex or painful to talk about a subject. Children’s drawings are not as meaningless as they seem. Often, they will provide extremely valuable insight regarding the strengths, weaknesses, interests, and even the emotional status of the child.

If children are not provided with an opportunity to draw, it may be nearly impossible to connect at all with children who are disabled or even challenged. Art can be a key to a child’s mind. While children often find themselves incapable of smooth expression, art helps them to express themselves in a safe environment.
